In this historic moment, we are relieved to see renewed focus from the U.S. on addressing climate change. President Biden’s climate plan is the strong, comprehensive, and intersectional approach that we need to see! Checkout more highlights of his plan in our overview on Instagram.

Another critical piece of addressing climate change is tackling our plastics crisis, both of which are thoroughly intertwined. Not only does plastics production stem from the fossil fuel industry (1 in every 8 barrels of oil is used to create plastics and this is only increasing as the world’s energy landscape transitions away from fossil fuels), but the management of plastic waste also releases greenhouse gas emissions contributing to climate change.

President Biden has demonstrated environmental leadership in his first few days in office by rejoining the Paris Climate Agreement, blocking the Keystone XL Pipeline, and taking unprecedented action on immigration reform that paves a just transition to a regenerative future. A natural extension of this focus is to address plastic and the various negative impacts it causes throughout the supply chain from extraction to disposal.

For this reason, alongside 550+ other organizations we signed onto the #PlasticFreePresident campaign to urge President Biden to take eight priority actions towards a plastic-free future that he can make on his own authority. These actions include changing procurement with federal purchasing power, preventing new plastic production infrastructure, rejecting false solutions, taking an environmental justice approach, not subsidizing plastic producers, and more!

On this President's Day we ask you to add your voice to the petition today! We need to see strong action from the White House on plastics.
